MPs back Boris’ deal but WRECK chances of Brexit on Oct 31
BORIS Johnson has FINALLY got backing for his Brexit deal tonight from MPs – but they have wrecked his hopes for an October 31 exit.
MPs opted to push his deal through to the next stage of the House of Commons by 329 – 299 this evening in a huge victory for the PM after months of negotiations with Brussels and with his own backbenchers.
The PM did tonight what Theresa May was unable to do in three years – get a majority in the Commons to actually leave the EU.
Boris this evening said it was “joyful” that MPs had finally “embraced a deal”.
But minutes later the PM tonight lost his vote 308 – 322 on the crucial timetable motion, leaving his promise to get us out of the bloc by Halloween in tatters.
Furious MPs had claimed they didn’t have enough time to look at the 100 page bill.
The PM revealed he would put the Brexit Bill on ice and hit “pause” while the EU consider what to do.
He added tonight: “One way or another, we will leave the EU with this deal.”
Tellingly, he did not say that would be on October 31 – an admission he will likely now have to abandon his repeated promise.
Earlier tonight Boris threatened to pull the whole Brexit law if he’s forced into a three month delay to Brexit and call an election – but he didn’t mention this after his loss.
